Brand New Day

Vi just nodded softly. She felt peaceful and full. It was just perfect. Especially sitting beside Pernas. After a moment she took a breath, "It's beautiful, Pernas. It must be wonderful to always be on this island."

"Yes it is." Pernas said with a soft smile. "Well, sometimes it gets lonely." He said after a pause. "Nobody I can relate to. Nobody like humans." he turned to her. "You seem to really like it alot." he said. "Though sometimes it can get a bit boring. I usually try to come up with something to do to keep things interesting and exciting. Though I haven't done anything in a while, due to a lack of ideas. Not that I need to right now. Events of late..." he said with a soft laugh.

"Yeah, there has been a lot going on," Vi paused a moment, "It feels a bit like my fault. After all I was the first one on the island."

She paused as she looked across the beautiful island.

((erk nothing popping up. maybe you should have the bird come ask Pernas for the music? -shrugs-))

Suddenly, as if someone wanted it to, a bird flew up.

"Hello." Pernas said, stretching out his hand for the bird to land.

"Hello, Lord Dragon." The bird said, letting Pernas stroke its neck. Birds like that.

"What brings you up here?" Pernas asked.

"Well, some of us were curious as to when you'd have your next recital?" the bird asked.

"Recital?" Pernas asked. "Heh. Haven't practiced in a bit."

The bird looked over at Vi. "Sometimes Lord Dragon plays music for us."

Vi smiled at the bird and when it spoke to her she looked a little surprised but responded, "Oh? What do you play Pernas?" She asked him directly.

((Erk I am having problems >.< forgive me! I'll post better if I'm not so preoccupied XP))

"I play a lot of things." Pernas said. "Violin, Cello, Piano." He laughed. "I've had a lot of time to work on it."

"Sometimes he plays for a week on end." The bird said.

"And when I'm done, I find that the cows have raided my garden." Pernas said in that manner of dry humor.

Vi chuckled softly at the dry humor, "I've never heard of a song that lasts for a week." She looked at him with curiousity in her steady gaze

She seemed free up here, with out her father, and her eyes glittered with a new sense of freedom. There was nothing to stress over or worry about. No wondering or waiting. It was just slow and steady.

Just how Vi liked it, "Pernas I would really enjoy hearing you play. I love music." She looked out across the land a moment as if she felt that she was dreaming and could no longer look at his brilliance.

"You do?" Pernas asked. "That's good to hear. Granted, I've never met anyone who didn't like music. Nobody who wasn't some walking evil incarnate." he laughed.

"But perhaps I should have a little recital. Have anyone attend." Pernas said, standing up. "I'll have to look up some things I can play, brush up on them."

The birdie flew over to Vi's shoulder and landed on it.

"Well, we should probably head back to where we were this morning, so your father doesn't get concerned." He said, sighing and sitting down again. "Only if you want. Though come to think of it..." He said, thinking out loud. "I think my father did set up some sort of transport thing, to get from one part of the island to others. Big island, after all. Though I haven't used the thing in years..." he shrugged. "Wings."

"What is it?" Vi asked curiously. She looked back at him as if it would appear right at that moment. Seemed strange that there might just be something modern here like transportation but she doubted that it would be considered modern at all.

"It's a teleporter of some kind." Pernas said, leading her to yet another cave entrance. "There are spots all over the island. Father set the whole thing up." he said. "He was better at magic than I was. Come to think of it," he added, entering one room, "I was never good with magic at all. Never could figure it out, even after he turned me into a dragon. Then again, I never tried."

It was a small, round room with a large circle in the center. A circle that seemed large enough for the dragon to stand in.

"Here we are." he said. "Father made it very simple. You see, there's a map of the island here on the wall," he said, pointing. "All you have to do is touch the part of the map you want to go to, and step in the circle. You'll come out in the nearest teleporter to that place."

Vi nodded and blushed slightly, "Would you give me a demonstration? I can follow after you if you like." She smiled shyly up at him. Feeling suddenly a little afraid. Magic was not something that she dealed with. It seemed pretty easy but even so, she felt as if she was going to mess up as soon as she touched anything.

"It's simple," Pernas said, walking up to the map. "You just push the spot on the map..." he did so, pressing his finger onto the location they had been that morning. "And then," he walked into the circle, "you just -"

But he was gone in a flash of light.

Vi looked startled but only hesitated a moment before redoing the same exact thing he had done.

"Where the **** have you been?" She heard her father yelling.

"Just went out for breakfast is all." Pernas said, trying to calm him. "There's nothing to be concerned about."

"What isn't there to be concerned about?" Her father said. "We're stuck here, one of us is dead. It's like I'm in some sort of crazy dream."

The light had been blinding and somehow Vi had managed to land right on her face. That was when sound came back to her and it flooded her hearing a bit painfully as her father was yelling.

She scrammbled to her feet. Fearing that he was angry at her but it was only mostly worried, "I'm fine, Dad. Just fine."

The Father paid little heed, still fuming.

"Sir?" Pernas said. "I'm sorry. But nothing happened. She was in no danger. There's really nothing to worry about."

"It's all safe?"

"Yes."

"Safe like Ralph?" Father asked sarcastically.

"Well, Ralph did go on top of a cliff in a storm." Ned said dryly, walking by. "By the way, Pernas." he added. "You might want to be careful about Cappy's new little cult."

Pernas was quiet for a minute. "Thank you, Ned." he said, unsure.

Vi flinched when her father mentioned Ralph. She moved beside her father obidiently and grabbed his hand, "I'm okay, Daddy."

The Father looked at Vi, and calmed down a bit, though he grumbled something under his breath.

"You are extraordinarily cranky." Ned added before walking off.

Father walked off and sat down on a rock, putting a hand to his forehead. "Great. It's like that book, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, where the cows talk..."

Vi chuckled finding both the cow's comment and her father mildly funny, "So Captain Carbonbuckle is up to his old tricks?" She kind of missed the cow. He was very funny and seemed to like her a lot.

Though if he was bent on destroying Pernas she didn't like that. She knew the cows had a kind of right but if they had been normal cows they wouldn't have minded so much.

"I have no idea..." Pernas said. "Maybe he's doing something new, what with the new herd and all, but for the most part, I don't see how he can really come up with much more than his usual variations on 'let's see if I can annoy or poison him?' Not like he has much in the way of resources to work with."

A pause.

"Alir?" he asked.

"Yes, sire?" Alir asked.

"You know where my violin is?"

"Er, no. Sorry."

"Ah, well, I'll find it soon enough." Pernas muttered. "Probably in the library."

"Want me to go with you Pernas?" Vi asked quietly though her gaze shifted to her father to see what he would say about her going off with the dragon.

Quickly she added, "Daddy can come too right?"

Pernas stopped. "Err, not right now." he said. "Let me practice a little before I show you." he said. "I'll be back in just a few minutes." he said, disappearing down the hall, heading into the library. Alir followed him.

"Ahh." Alir said. "There it is" he said, landing on the violin, which was on a table.

"Thank you." Pernas said, sitting down next to the table and picking it up. He tested a few notes with the bow, tuning the violin. "What's wrong with me, Alir?"

"Sorry?" Alir asked.

"Something's wrong with me." Pernas said, continuing his tuning. "I'm not as sure of myself. It used to be like I was the god of this world."

"Aren't you?" Alir asked.

"I don't know." Pernas said. "I'm more powerful than anyone else here."

"That qualifies you." Alir said. "Besides, it's not like you're a jerk about it or anything."

"You're not a cow or a human prisoner." Pernas said, getting up and exiting the library, heading back to where the others were. "I'm back!" he said, trying to be more cheerful. "Right where I left it!" he added, holding up the violin.

Vi smiled as he returned and was unaware of his bad mood. Instead she admired the beautiful piece of art in his hands. Beautiful deep red tinted wood and graceful curves. It was a beautiful instrument and well suited to the light hearted Pernas.

She settled in to a sitting position and wondered briefly if he would play here but decided that she was not going to speak. Until something came to mind.

"Pernas, the birds told me that you play for days. Perhaps you can cut it a bit short? I don't think I could listen to you for days, no matter how beautiful it is. I would get very hungery," Vi added and patted her stomach cutely.

Pernas laughed. "Sure." he said, sitting down, setting up the violin to his chin. He raised the bow to it, then stopped. "Hmm..." he said, thinking. Then, after a pause, his face lit up. "I know!" he said. "Here's something I think you may recognize!"

And with that, he began to play the first movement of Felix Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto.

Alir, meanwhile, perched on his head, admiring him.

Sitting down? Usualy violin and viola players played standing up but Vi calmly listened to him. It was beautiful and she recognized bits of it. Though she seemed to shift nervously through out the entire thing.
